Tactics vs Man Management

by DreadPirateRoberts, Mar 23, 2022

Something I have been testing on my new save with Chorley (starting in the vanarama national north), is how imporant constantly changing your tactic really is. We already know that the AI does not adjust to your winning tactic, but even beyond that, if you are not getting results, should you really turn to your tactic instantly? I see people tweaking their tactic every 2-3 games, sometimes every single game, because it's not producing the results they want.

I do of course understand that you need to have an okay tactic, it is the foundation after all. But , if you adhere to the basic principles of tactic making in FM22, I personally believe you can be extremely successful and never change a thing. People overthink too much.

So what factors are often overlooked? Mainly the man management. Resting your players frequently, keeping their fatigue levels down, as well as their overall condition. Frequently praising training, recent form or even a recent game to keep the moral high. Focus way more on touchline shouts, use them whenever you can, they're massive. Make sure their individual training is correct. ALWAYS train a player in the position AND role that you want them to play in your tactic. Even if they are 'nautral' in that position. Buy faster players. Don't sub players off randomly , players who are described as 'having a good game' or better should be kept on unless they're completely dead. Even then I rarely take them off. Play the players who are in good form rather than the players who look better on paper. Make more of an effort on team talks, if your team is looking complacent, adress it. If your team is nervous, adress it. You can often tell in the pre-game dressing room by the body languages. If that doesn't give you enough, look at your opponents, are u expected to win? are you in a good position in the league? overperforming? there are certain team-talks that work 95% of the time, but I'm not gonna spoil it. Individual team talks are very strong. I have been able to turn games around being 3-0 down at half time not changing a single thing tactically. I simply follow what I wrote above (as good as you can). I'm currently on my 4th season with Chorley with 3 straight promotions, currently top of league 1 in november. I have never lost more than 2 games in a row, and never went more than 3 games without winning.

I know it comes across as bragging , but these are things I wish I knew before I played CM for the first time all those years ago.

Unless you're telling your team to play in slow motion tempo or sitting in your keepers lap when out of position, the tactic is not your main problem. I will also add. I have not touched my tactic since my first day at the job. Not in-game either. Not if im chasing a game. Not if im winning. In my normal saves I have an energy saving copy of my main tactic. that I go to if im winning by alot. But for the purpose of the experiment, i refrained from doing so in this save.

Good post.

Experienced FM players understand that there are about 10-15 factors that have a huge impact on the result in the game and your tactics is just one of them.

Good post, well written up. You're right the AI doesn't respond to your tactic, it responds to your reputation. The higher up the league you are, the more chance the AI will change mentality as it see's you as a threat. Praising training is often overlooked along with criticising training.
