How to correctly choose a player

by Daz, Jan 6, 2023

Hi everyone!
Lately when playing FM23 I'm using a lot your attributes table test, to help me choose players to buy. But I find it hard to compare players that are "different".

I believe that are 2 types of players: Player A and Player B: Player A is the classic pace merchant, very fast, tall and that's it. Player B is still decently fast and tall, but his strenghts are the specific attributes for that role (so marking and tacking for a CB or passing, ball control and dribbling for a number 10).
READ THIS!!! --> When talking about player B i'm not talking about someone with 8 pace and acceleration! I'm talking about players with 12ish, with 15ish on the role-specific attributes.

Now that we made things clear, let's take as an example Owen Otasowie (Club Brugge) that is a classic Player A and Amadou Haidara (RB Leipzig) that will be a Player B. Otasowie is a player that has everything the attributes table suggests: fast, strong, good in the air, agiliy and balance adn nothing else. Haidara is good in those stats but not as good as Otasowie.
Despite being a little worst in the most important stats, Haidara is a lot better in basically everything else needed for a DM, passing, ball control adn every mental stat.

So the question is: How much should we condsider the attribute rating table? Do we just simply ignore all the stats other than pace and height, going for Player A, or Player B, due to having so many more stats that are better, are still superior?

Ignore the role ratings because it's cosmetic bullshit like the advises that your assistant manager give you during matches.

Oh yea i know that, what i meant is that Haidara is so much better at things like passing, ball controll, vision, dribbling etc... that we all know are important for a midfielder

I can tell you how I pick players

First, I narrow it and leave only players with the highest CA then I look at 4 attributes: Acceleration, Pace, Anticipation and Dribbling.

It's really easy.

I have a few questions tho

1) I'm managing mid-bottom teams in the premier league and i choose players by setting a pace and acceleration filter (sometimes dribbling and anticipation too) to like 14 for CB or 16 for wingers, then I choose. Do you think i could push those fliters up a little?

2) you use you method on every position? So you look at dribbling and anticipation even when looking for a CB?

3) Do you end up with tall pace merchants or with balanced players?

Thanks.

No, I don't look at dribbling for CB, for CB I look at Jumping Reach and Strength instead

Have a look at the positional ratings thread. I have found that Pace and Acceleration are not quite as important for DMs. If I use the ykykyky Genie Scout ratings for those 2 players in my game (1 season in), Player B comes out on top even though he only has a DM position rating of 18/20 vs Player 1 20/20.

Aren't the position rating supposed to be just cosmetic as @Bogeyman said?

No, as @Bogeyman  said, the role ratings are cosmetic. the position rating is important

Do yourself a favor and remove role rating from your view. Just right click the column and replace it with something useful instead.

Hi, I am using the ZAZ under 50 minus 25 filter for fm genie right now. How does ykykyk differ from ZAZ under 50?

How do you narrow it to find players with the highest CA?

I use FMRTE or the official in-game editor to check the CA of players.

ZaZ takes up to 25 points off all the attributes that are rated under 50 points in the ykykyky calculations. This means that the ratings are skewed to only the most important ratings.

Do you guys go for area of the pitch when using ratings or specific roles? For example, if I only play with Segundo Volante should I specifically look for that or just DM in general.

Another example is full back - full back support vs full back - wing back support, I've noticed the ratings in genie scout can vary quite a lot for those 2 even though they are quite similar so picking just a fullback vs a specialized full back - wing back can have different requirements. Mainly wondering if the ratings (I've been using Mark ykykyk) are just hyper specific or more general

Look at this test - https://fm-arena.com/thread/3293-what-it-takes-to-dominate-epl-with-bournemouth/

7 highly ranked attributes ( Acceleration, Agility, Pace, Anticipating, Concentration, Work Rate and Dribbling ) from this table - https://fm-arena.com/table/18-attribute-testing/ were slowly increasing by 1 point and when the CA reached only 150 the team started winning EPL over Man City and Liverpool, which have 160-180CA players.

As you can see the role/duty rating is cosmetic bullshit.

I think we can say that PAce and Acceleration are some basis for all posts, and it's seems logical.

Because even if you're defender is the tallest and the better header of the championship, it means nothing if he run too slow.

All other atributes are for me some "bonus", which are cosmetics like 90% - 95% of the game.

Tests made here show us the way every year.

Of course, you need to apply some common sense.

Obviously, for the central defenders it makes sense looking for 'Jumping Reach' or 'Strength' instead of 'Dribbling'.

I would not agree that it's only about Acceleration and Pace, no doubts, Acceleration and Pace are the most important attributes but there're at least 12 attributes from this table https://fm-arena.com/table/18-attribute-testing/ that I pay attention to:

- Acceleration
- Pace
- Jumping Reach ( only for CDs and DMs or might be like bonus for any position )
- Anticipation
- Balance
- Agility
- Concentration
- Finishing ( only for attackers )
- Work Rate
- Dribbling ( excluding CDs )
- Stamina
- Passing

I'm sure if you pay attention to these 12 attributes then you can easily build an invincible team. :)

Is there a downside to doing this? I thought it was always better to prioritize those key attributes over going for balanced players?

It worked well in testing for me

Any links to other post or other places for more info on the stuff you talk about here?

Especially:
-ZAZ under 50 minus 25 filter
-Mark ykykyk

What are these, and where can I find them?

Cheers!
