In our online leagues, the narrow diamond is considered to be the weakest formation and has been for about three versions (FM22,23,24). We have a player who loves this formation, he always sticks to this formation, and the result is that he always loses. I think the narrow diamond is probably the worst formation against AI. Does anyone want to join us for a challenge? Try to get a relatively high score.
I have atleast 4 different tactics with this formation which i tested from my end and it just sucks. If you look at this formation https://fm-arena.com/thread/6609-433-triple-threat/ which got a score of 53 and all i did was move the AF -> SS or AM and the score drops very significantly. Didnt even bother releasing that in FM-Arena. I gave up on this one, curious if other are up for the challenge.
Yeah it is worse than any tactic i think as a shape, maybe trying a flat 3 man midfield can help to spread the width in midfield cause with that narrow midfield and back 4 it is very bad in defense also seeing how good the no DM is doing in some shapes this season and this tactic can benefit how narrow it is even though never tried it tho
the issue is that this is a possession-centric shape and traditional possession tactics kind of suck right now compared to gegenpress variations. Where a brazilian box wants to press press press and a wide diamond wants to spread you out and work the resulting gaps, narrow diamond really just wants to tiki-taka the nest of triangles in the center of the pitch.
I *love* narrow diamonds. My all-time favorite tactic was a diamond in fm21 or 22 that just absolutely shredded everyone all the time. That was the year before there was a big focus on making everyone's first touch in traffic more realistic.
