Guide on How to use Genie Scout to find meta players

by Bafici, Jan 15, 2025

Hello all,

There is a lot of questions regarding how to do certain things in Genie Scout(GS) so i hope this helps.

First we need to setup the program to suit our needs.

1-You need to download This ratings file (OR This from @Pip  and put it in C:\FM Genie Scout 24\Ratings.

You need to download This layout file and put it in C:\FM Genie Scout 24\Layouts.

2-Open GS and from top left select the files we just put in.

3-Open FM and load your save. Go back to GS and Select Load Game or click on the little icon next to GS icon. You will see a loading bar down below. This process can take a minute depending on how many players in your save.

4-After everything is loaded click on Red Filter button.I don't want players who have lower than 120 PA. You can search for everything you want.

5-These are all the players in the game who has 120PA at least. Down below you can see there is 27.304 players. You can sort the players according to positions.

6-I can hear you say "i don't want to see every player, i only want to see the players who are interested in joining me.". Don't worry, i got you covered.

After you filter the players you want, Press CTRL+A > Right Click > Add players. This will add all the players into "my shortlist" tab.

Go to that tab and save shortlist. Go into game > load this shortlist and put a tick "interested in" box. You assistant will filter the players who wants to join the club.

7-While you're in shortlist screen in the game click this button in GS and voila! Now you only see the players who are interested in your club.

Feel free to ask further questions. There might be parts hard to understand. I can edit in my free time.

** You can view your own squad if you click this button and type your club name.

what is this Layout?

For finding players that are interested in joining you I often do it the other way round as well.

Go to FM and go to all players in range and filter for those interested in joining.

Go to genie (assuming you have already loaded your game into genie), then use the button you highlighted (the green up arrow), this will load all the player in range and interested.

Then apply filters within that view (use the in shortlist tick box)

This saves importing shortlists into FM, but it has drawbacks if your scouting range isn't great.

I still do your method as well - especially if my filter is very targeted and I want to keep those players on my shortlist.

Thanks for sharing, I have some follow up questions if you don't mind:

- When opening FM Genie Scout and putting on your layout and ratings. When I close the app and open it again, let's say tomorrow, will the ratings still be loaded or do I have to do that part every time? I noticed the layout stays, just wondering if that's the same for ratings.

- When looking for a player, do you have an .. amount of % you aim for as a bare minimum? Let's say I look for a new AMR, do I only look at 70%+ best position rating? Reason for asking, most players seem to be extremily expensive so I was wondering how people deal with this.

Update the program maybe. I'm on gamepass too. It works.

Everything will be still loaded.

I don't have a minimum rating in my mind because i don't know the maximum rating in that position. I just sort best to worst. You can check your squads rating and then apply that rating as minimum.

I don't know if it's just me overthinking it, but I still find it a bit rough regarding positions, because both striker positions in your view say that my strikers are not the best for it's potition. I use advanced forward attack, but unsure how to look at it as your view has FS/TS.

Roles doesn't matter in terms of attribute requirements. FS is the exact ratings with the tests. I would use this one for Advanced Forward.

In TS i made jumping reach a bit more important, nothing else is different. This can score more if you aim corners to this player.

Interesting! I am gonna be in a lot of trouble this season then. I am at the start of my 6th season with Dortmund and have treated Adeyemi always as an inside forward, but according to your view/weights he's my highest FS %. With him coming in the picture for that position, while only having 1 spot, this is gonna be a tough day in the office to figure out if I play him over my 2 advanced forwards.

@Bafici Hey mate, it terms of positional rating what would be the lowest value you would go to? e.g 77?

Depends on my team. I try to buy the highest rating i can. I can't sign 80 rating player when playing in English league 2 for example.

I also mainly look at sale value besides rating. I'm chasing bargains. Can't spend 100 mil on a player :)

I get an error whenever I try to use your ratings.glf Layout file: 'List index out of bounds (8193)

Can you try to change the layout after you load the players. I think there is a bug, if it doesn'T work you can use the normal layout or create one yourself.

Are there any meta GS ratings files that integrate hidden attributes like Important Matches or Consistency? I feel like those could definitely sway my opinion on who to bring into my club.

You can't intergrate them into ratings unfortunately. You can put a filter when you are searching

Yes you can. They are integrated into the ratings coefficient screen. I even ran a test where I added a 5 to Important Matches and Unai Simon (who has a 7 in that attribute) dropped from a 76.9 to a 76.44.

Yes you are right i missed that. I only checked Important Matches and Consistency and coludn't see it under that tab :D

Thanks for this! Very useful.

Does anyone know if there is a way to exclude 'players on loan' from the search - I get a lot of talented youngsters returned when searching however they're all on loan to smaller clubs from elite clubs in Europe - therefore being out of reach for me.

@Bafici I appreciate the good work you have done here but what about the position values a player has?
I mean there was a test two years ago for player positions, which basically says even 1 point in player position has an impact on the tactic.

I can't change positional values but the program takes them into account already. You can search by position to be sure.

I already know that you can't edit anything related to positional values and I understand that Genie has already a formula that calculates the positional rating including positional values but here in this post "Mark" uses the positional value results from fm-arena and finds out that 1 point reduction of position value should decrease the positional rating approximately by 2.17%. When reading his reasons behind this theoretical calculations, it kinda makes sense. I just wondered what you think of this idea. You can take a look at the discussion in this thread.

Mark said: It is by 2.17%. For example you have a player rated 18/20 for a position and GS shows 56.84%. The calculation is 56.84% - (56.84% x (2.17% x 2)) = 54.37%
