dubbed5 said: Hi guys. I'm a veteran FM player, having played more than 1000 hours with FM2013.
What I really loved is that I could play ANY style I wanted if I had the right players.
I won leagues with mid-level teams using a very solid 4-1-4-1 formation, with counter or defensive mentality, a very deep defensive line, with no pressing. Most of our matches were like 1-0, 0-0, 2-1, etc. We didn't score much but also rarely conceded; even stronger teams struggled against our defense.
I also had success with slow-tempo, short-passing tiki-taka tactics, getting 65-70% average possession.
Then on other saves, I went full attacking with a 4-2-3-1 formation (2 MC, 3 AMC) and scored the most goals in the league, even though we weren't the strongest team.
After 10 years, I came back to FM, and I'm disgusted by FM2024's match engine. Apparently, nothing works except gegenpressing. Tactical instructions don't make any difference. I can't get results with slow-tempo tiki-taka or catenaccio styles even though I have the right players.
I read about FM-Arena in a Reddit post and found it very useful. Your tactical instructions and attribute testings basically verified what I feel after ~150 hours playing FM2024: most of the tactical instructions don't do anything, except for a few like high tempo and pressing. And most player attributes are meaningless, except for the meta attributes. This game is seriously broken.
As I skipped every FM between 13 and 24, what would you guys say, which one has the best match engine? By "best," I mean the one where I could succeed playing any style of tactic I want, not just high tempo gegenpress. Expand
I still rate fm19 the best, but definitely appreciate to added functionality that SI has introduced. Looking forward to the engine changes coming at the end of this year

Mine was definitely fm19. Been playing since cm days. you could just about play any main formation that season. Ever since there has been a dominate tactic formation, including strikerless.
Updated results with Blue Routine are now available in the OP.
This has now topped the points per match. I still slightly prefer Han106. But that is probably because it has worked so well for me. As I have said before, there are many ways to interpret these results.
Could you by any chance test my setpieces? I already posted them somewhere in the forum, but I didn't upload them to the set-pieces section. I'm interested to see how it will compete. Expand
If you upload it to the Set Piece Sharing Section I will test it in the next few days.
RNG would still be at play here. This routine led until the last test and there was a bizarre low score from Team E. The worst of all testing. The only score outside the top 6 for this routine. When I looked into it they lost 14 players to injury for more than a month through the season. In all the other measures this routine performed well. If I take out the lowest and highest single performance I think it wins.
You are welcome to use whichever you choose from the results table. There are many ways to interpret these results.

@Delicious's Attacking Corners Zimsmula's Defensive Third Defending Throw-ins and Attacking DFK @AideNGomiinaM's Attacking IFK @CSTG KANE's Defending Corners and Defending DFK Chou's Defending IFK
This would have to be tested to see if it has the best set of set pieces, but it's my best interpretation and attempt at it. Expand
I definitely recommend you to test this. In a season in which I scored 191 goals, I scored 58 corner goals with this routine. Kusi-Asare, with 20 jumping, scored 80 goals in the league that season (: Expand

Sorry for the delays. I decided I wanted to extend it to 4000 tests. I have now done 3 set piece routines and updated the original post. I removed standard deviation as I didn't think it offered much . I added a few other columns to try and make sense of the testing and updated the Legend at the bottom of the OP. I have also given my thoughts and the schedule for testing. I hope this helps someone. At the end of the process I might look to take the best from each of the SPs and build something for testing.
dzek said: Just to clarify something here. My test league uses the same player attributes as it is in FM-Arena tactic test league V1.0. I don't know if there are any changes in V2.0.
Other than that congratulations Mark for the initiative and I imagine that would help a lot of people.
Thank you! Expand
Only the small changes I mentioned on the test league forum
Blue 2 and Han106 1-24 were slightly disappointing. I guess I had pretty high hopes for them. Still, they both were pretty competitive.

I have now tested this routine and highly recommend it. The OP has been updated with the results from this.
I do
@Delicious's Attacking Corners
Zimsmula's Defensive Third Defending Throw-ins and Attacking DFK
@AideNGomiinaM's Attacking IFK
@CSTG KANE's Defending Corners and Defending DFK
Chou's Defending IFK
This would have to be tested to see if it has the best set of set pieces, but it's my best interpretation and attempt at it.
Well done
The OP has been updated with the completed results.
The updated @Delicious routine looks very good. Only just behind in overall points but leading or close to it with all other stats.
Zim has 2 so @Han106 might not have removed the second one.
