[FM26] what's the best meta tactic right now?

by Gracolas, 7 days, 10 hours ago

What tactic are you guys using right now for FM26?

Had a lot of luck with a pretty simple 4-2-3-1. Once again it appears that the most important thing is to play with high tempo and to press high

Using this tactic and mc40 set piece routine, winning 90 % matches, away is balanced mentality. Won 3 consecutive leagues and CL with Arsenal using this tactic.

Unlike the match graphics the match engine is more or less the same of FM 2024 so basically all the meta tactics of FM 2024 still work very well on FM 2026, so intense pressing, high tempo and a formation with wide player positions like 4-2-4, 4-2-3-1 it's still the way to go if you want to overachieve, at least in the beta.

I have tried tactics with one DM, but they work the same as FM24. Not completely bad, but apparently two DMs still work better. There is still a long way to test combinations of IP and OOP, though.

I wonder if 1 DM in attack and 2 DMs in defence might be the way to go.  I am waiting for the full game before playing with tactics

Most of the content creators, as well as my own personal tactic, seem to work moving IP wingers or CMs down to MWs and DMs OoP respectively seems to get results.
I've also found lower mentalities like cautious to be actually effective, unlike in 24.
Mid blocks also seem really viable.

Just my early thoughts and experiments.

In theory, we can combine the most effective out-of-possession (OOP) shape in FM24—like 4-4-2 or 4-2-4—with the most goal-productive in-possession (IP) shape, such as a 1-4-2-3 or a more conservative setup like 2-2-5-1. These shapes often rely on two defensive midfielders (DMs), similar to the 4-2-3-1 gegenpress meta that's widely used in FM24

Unfortunately, it is not that simple. The position of players when you recover the ball have great influence on how counter-attacks develop, so the OOP is very important for attacking, not only for defense. The same can be said about IP for defense, on how you are positioned against counter-attacks. The game is still in beta, we will see lots of fun tactics when tests start.

Hi @max 737 thank you for sharing but I have 2 questions. First, is that Highway Star tactic by Gerard for FM24, that still works in FM26 beta? And second, how / where to find the compilation of tactics like this, as the "TABLES" tab up top still has no FM26 section in it. Apologies as I'm new here in this forum, thank you

It's not the same tactic as such as FM24, there are some differences with it. Gerrard is also known as Knap, he has his own spreadsheet, you can find him on discord or SI forums, he post's tactic updates regularly on the SI forums

its a new tactic made for fm 26, just use this for now as its the best tactic on meta atm

If I were a betting man I reckon systems that play the same formation both in and out of possession will be most effective because position proficiency matters less

Yeah, same here. SI has a long history of adding features that are mostly cosmetic. But it’s still early, and there’s a chance we might get the best of both worlds—benefits from both in-possession and out-of-possession shapes during attack and defense

I mean, just playing with the tactics a bit makes it pretty obvious the players move and react pretty differently based on changes in formations, distances in roles between IP and OoP, instructions, etc ...

I really think this is going to be a great year for all kinds of tactics.
I'm positive certain roles and instructions will stand out as high performers and good formations will remain good. But I really feel the testing will show more "viable" tactics than previous years because of the IP/OoP dynamic.

You mind posting a screenshot it two?
IP/OoP screens and instructions would be sufficient🤗

NM. You have a separate post for that here:

I'm not sure those results are trustworthy. No attempt to isolate variables... I see you at least tried a few teams with decent results!

Your tactic worked. Hard to say if it was really your tactic or specific instructions or the teams that made the difference though... No?

I become obsessed in FM23 with a tactic called REAPER, it was 5 up front with 3 shadow strikers and 2 wingers.
The whole idea was for the team to sit deep, and constantly hitting sides on the fast counter attack. so this year i tried to recreate it as we have in possesion and out of possesion options now.
I tweaked it 3/4 times until i come up with this, and it just works. Not sure how or why, but it does exactly as i wanted during the FM24 days.
fast counter attacking football which causes lots of 1v1s and seems to stay strong at the back while defending.
Tried and tested with Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea, Napoli, Wrexham and now im testing with Forest and every single save is working amazingly.
It will produce low possesion but i've never been fussed with that, as long as the highlights are good to watch then i'm happy.
that's what this tactic was all about. good 1v1 goals and exciting highlights which it's producing over and over again.

As for the instructions, I honestly don't know, i simply set the tactic, set the team instructions, made a few adjustments to player instructions and it just worked.

@Zippo Any update on how the league is coming along and when we can expect it? Any way we can help? Thanks.

Well, you can color me intrigued. I remember the Reaper tactic. I never used it, but this year I'm going out of my comfort zone and working on a Pentagon challenge. I have a solid 343 that I'm really enjoying for my Ryukyu side, but I'll take a look at yours and maybe build around it for my 2nd leg/team. :D I mean, the IP/OoP tactics are easily the best part of FM this year, so, it seems like the right year to try some fun/crazy shit. :D
Any specific advice for types of players to use for it (outside of the usual pacey, physical kids with the right touch of other stats)? :D

Hi,

I can tell you that we're working on it and making a progresses but I can't give any ETA of the testing start.

The game UI and its other parts have been significantly changed this year so it requires time to adjust our tactic testing server and as I said, we're working on it.
