Do 'Overlaps' make any difference?

by Chewbacca, Dec 25, 2022

Hello,

I'm really confused right now.

I see people often use 'Overlaps' Team Instruction in their tactics.

But the same tactic was tested with and without 'Overlaps' and the result was almost the same

Overlaps - https://fm-arena.com/tactic/3838-4132-poirer-xiii/

No Overlaps - https://fm-arena.com/tactic/3911-4132-poirer-xiii-no-overlaps/

Also, here's another test of the 'Overlaps' instruction and it also indicates that it does nothing - https://fm-arena.com/thread/2910-overlap-left-amp-right/

I wonder what's the purpose of the 'Overlaps'?

I'd greatly appreciated if someone explain it to me.

Thanks.

I guess is just not a possession based tactic. Overlaps have no time to kick in maybe. Underlaps are having some impact thou.

Overlaps mean that play is slowed down to allow the full-back time to overlap, therefore getting more men forward. If you look at the two tactics, the one with overlaps is better defensively but worse offensively. This is because the attacking play is slowed down, also meaning that the opposition has less time on the ball and so fewer goalscoring opportunities.

Likewise, the tactic without overlaps is better offensively as it attacks with more intensity but is is worse defensively as it takes more risks instead of waiting for the full-backs to catch up. Overall, I think it's just down to personal preference rather than being a meta instruction.

One with overlap did scored more and took more goals

+3 on each part, means with overlap you are actually risking more in order to score,it's like adding penetration.. You can play without it but if your ultimate goal is too juice more out the tactic pontential you go for that, but we should ask @Zippo how much the rng hitted both of tactics in order to understand or a save to check them out.

Did you mean that a tactic without Overlap scores more goals?

Because I see that your 4132 Poirer XIII without Overlaps scored more goals than with Overlaps.

Am I correct?

I was allucinating, was sure  he did "tweaked" IV and not III.

It's like @Steelwoodsaid, it's like you adding tempo and penetration, we have to understand that those tactics are runned on a certain league, overlaps helps the team to penetrate very defensive team, like in game if you are "City" maybe expect for some singularities, IA is going to play defensive against you. On the test is different, every manager is setuped with the same tendecies and they never close up, so we can't really say if is overlap being "useless" or "just giving a bit of tempo",in order to proper test it, the option should been tested in order to face only "defensive approaches" teams with it off and on, that's a limit of the "test", but we can't really have everything.
Maybe that's why it gave that result on from the test, but really setuping "leagues" to check out an option is a bit "funny".

For me is adding 0.5 point to the bracket, that's why in order to come closer to the truth we should know how much the rng hitted both of tactics or just by checking the save.
Getting more goals is the equivalent to risk to lose more games and since those rng wave strike alot we can't be 100% sure.

Ok, thank you for the explanation.
