Hints and tips for FM21

by Machismo, May 31, 2021

Are there some tweaks I can use to improve my team?
e.g. 1) I've found you can set fullbacks RL to auto instead of fixed attack/sup/def.
2)You can set training intensity to auto.

One I'm desperate for is how to automate first team players to play in the reserves when they become unfit rather than me having to notice they are NOT in top condition.
and are there any others that'll help the manager?

You can always ask your assistant manager to pick the team, then they will consider player fitness. It's not gonna be optimal, but I don't see another way to automatize player pick.

Have you tried this?

Ohh, I misread his question, thought he wanted to automate first team players picked to a match, ignoring those that are not in top condition. I guess he wanted exactly what you said.

Heh, I think English isn't his native language and that's why he gave the thread such an inappropriate name but no worries I changed it to "Hints and tips for FM21". :)

Talking about hints, there is something that would be interesting to do, but I guess only @Mark would have the patience to do so. I would like to see a list of each position, role, player instruction and team instruction, with the maximum score it got in tests in FM-Arena. That way we could see what definitely doesn't work, like IF or strikers in general, and what does work.

I took the description "Hack" from 'Bust the Net' an FM guru.  He described the "automatic" setting  instead of att/sup/def. for fullbacks as 'the oldest hack in FM'.

It's not a good feature, to be honest. Using automatic will often be the same as setting the role manually, plus performing worse when you change the team mentality.

Thanks.  So the IWBs default is set to 'sup' (Zazz Blue).  If I switch to Cautious or Defend should I manually change their roles to 'defend' when I change Mentality during a match?

I don't think you should do that, defend duty on fullbacks is just not that good. When you switch to lower mentality the player's mentality lowers automatically - mentality of IWB on support duty when playing on Positive is also Positive (you can check that when you click "edit" on player instructions) and when you lower the mentality to Cautious for example, the IWB's mentality also drops to Cautious. That should be enough to improve the defensive performance, Defend duty is an overkill in my opinion (mentality of IWB on Defend duty when you are using cautious team mentality is Very Defensive, that's just going too defensive).

Like Egraam said, it's not needed to change player mentality individually. Just change the team mentality and that will automatically make them take less risks. If you change the player mentality directly, he will completely change the way he behaves, leading to lower win rate.

Ass man? I think you are playing another kind of game.

I've asked this before and I'm back to raise it again.
Zazz Blue - DM - recommended I think is DLP defend.

Been playing an Anchor Man for cautious/defensive mode & a BWM (DM) in Positive mode.

And it appears to me to be not much different.  Anchorman seems top stuff down in defensive.  But I've only played those roles in a dozen games.

What say you guys?

Changing the role of one position won't usually achieve the desired effect. Football is about synergy, meaning each role should allow the others to play better. If you look only at a role individually, maybe you will increase it's impact in the game, but that might cost you less impact of all others, leading to a worse tactic overall.

That being said, I would rather stick to tactics that were already tested as a whole instead of changing one small detail here or there. You can always test it yourself or post it for testing to see if your changes work, but more often than not, those small changes end up disrupting the tactic instead.

If you want a defensive tactic, you can always go to the table and sort it by "fewest goals conceded", then pick one with a good score as a secondary tactic.

I'm a dreadful Manager.  In the dressing room I just follow along with the AssMan's pep talk suggestions.  But on the sideline during the match I have to choose the shouts.  Whenever I shout I mostly wish I kept my mouth shut.

Give me some basic guidelines.  In what situation do I shout out what?

I won Premier League with a team in that level, ranging from 110 to 90 CA.

Never listen to your "ass man", he sucks. What I usually do the most is to tell my lads to play without pressure at the first pep talk, then tell them individually that I have faith in them all. During half time and final pep talk, I always tell them I'm not happy if they are not winning. If I'm expected to win, I also tell I'm unhappy when winning by just one goal, so they keep pushing instead of getting complacent. Any other than that I tell I'm happy, to relieve their pressure. (P.S.: I usually play with a weak team.)

I might be wrong here, but managing your team's mental state is as important as keeping them in shape or building a balanced squad. Pep talk is your main chance to "fix" their mental state, avoiding complacency, relieving pressure and increasing morale.

Before matches:
Before the match, use "i have faith in you" in combination with "pump fists" (dont know if it does make the difference  ).
if you are in a good run of won games and pundits are praising you, if it's available, using the gesture "point finger"  shout at your team : "this is the opportunity to make pundits right for praising you" or whatever it writes, I don't know since i'm at work :getlost:

if you are leading by only one goal on half time against weak or even teams, use "im not happy with your performance" using "point finger". If you are leading against your rival or tight match, use "I'm happy with your performance" using "raise hands" or "hands on hips".
if you are winning by two or more on half time, use "Dont get complacent" or "dont let your performance drop" using "point finger" so they dont get complacent.
if you're losing on half time, use second option available (don't know how it goes) using "thrash arms" :D

after the match, if you've won by one goal against weak team, use "i'm not happy with your perfomance, we need to be better against better opposition" using "point finger". if you've won by 2 or more, use "i'm delighted with your performance using "raise hands".

This works for me, with literally every team, whether it is Liverpool or Fulham :goofy:
I hope this helps you.

In match:

start on 10.min and use 2x encourage and 1 demand more as long as it's 0-0.

if you've scored a goal against big team, use praise for whole team.
if you've scored a goal against weak team, do nothing.
if you've scored a goal for 2-0, 3-1 and etc., use praise for whole team.

if opposition's scored a goal for 0-1, use encourage or demand more.
if opposition has scored another goal, use "berate".

that's about it, sorry for long post :(

Your posts are never long enough.  Your advice encourages me to keep playing.  (I've not really been an FM enthusiast til now)
