Ferni V7 – Basque Press V8.4 (FM26) or Ferni – Basque Press 3-2-5 (FM26) | V8.4
with the use of AZURE26 set-pieces.

This tactic made a La Liga champ at first season and semi-final at UCL. Just with core squad.
Full Role & Instruction Explanation

This tactic is a strikerless FM26 META-hybrid, built to maximise half-space occupation, late box arrivals, and stable rest-defence. Every role and instruction has a purpose — nothing is decorative.

Strikerless Gegenpress | High xG | Away-Stable | Patch-Resistant

This tactic is designed specifically for Football Manager 2026, built around a modern strikerless attacking system that prioritises positional superiority, controlled pressing, and long-term reliability — not short-term exploits.

The system morphs naturally between a 3-2-5 in possession and a 5-2-3 / 5-2-1-2 out of possession, ensuring elite attacking presence without sacrificing defensive stability, especially away from home.

Core Tactical Principles

Strikerless structure to overload central & half-space zones

3–2 rest defence at all times to protect against counters

High press + controlled defensive line (FM26-safe)

Immediate counter-press on loss to maintain territory

Wing-Backs provide width, not traditional wingers

Low crosses & cut-backs for late runners and SS arrivals

This setup consistently generates high xG with high shot quality, while keeping xGA under control across home and away matches.

Shadow Striker Roles – The Engine of the System

A defining feature of this tactic is the use of two Shadow Strikers (Attack) supported by a central Advanced Playmaker (Attack).

Why both SS are Attack (FM26-specific)

In FM26, Shadow Strikers behave very differently compared to FM25:

Attack duty triggers earlier and more aggressive box runs

Better occupation of central scoring zones

Less unnecessary dropping deep or roaming wide

Using SS (Support) in FM26 leads to hesitation and poor box presence — especially away from home.
For this reason, both SS must be Attack in this system.

Asymmetrical SS Behaviour

Although both SS are on Attack duty, their behaviour naturally differs due to positioning and surrounding roles:

Left SS

Operates deeper in the half-space

Attacks the far post aggressively

Links more with the overlapping Wing-Back

Pulls centre-backs out of shape

Right SS

Stretches the defence vertically

Exploits gaps between FB–CB channels

Creates space for cut-backs and second-phase attacks

This asymmetry prevents role collision and keeps defensive lines constantly destabilised.

Role of the Advanced Playmaker

The AP (Attack) acts as the system’s brain:

Controls tempo in the final third

Supplies through balls and cut-backs

Allows SS players to focus purely on movement and finishing

The result is consistent penetration without chaos.

Why This Tactic Works Long-Term

No engine abuse or hard exploits

Sustainable pressing intensity

Compact defensive structure away from home

Works with elite squads and strong mid-table teams

Stable across multiple FM26 patches

🧱 DEFENSIVE UNIT
GK – Sweeper Keeper (Support)

Role logic

Acts as a recycle point, not a risk-taker

Supports high press positioning

Prevents long-ball pressure buildup

Why Support

Attack duty increases unnecessary risk

Support keeps build-up calm and structured

CBs – Central Defenders (Defend)

Role logic

Hold a compact back three

Protect half-spaces behind Wing-Backs

Do NOT step out aggressively

Key principle

The defence reacts — it does not chase.

This keeps xGA stable, especially away.

🪽 WIDE STRUCTURE
Wing-Backs – Wing-Back (Support)

Role logic

Primary width providers

Stretch the pitch horizontally

Deliver cut-backs, not hopeful crosses

Why Support

Attack duty causes over-commitment away

Support allows recovery and defensive balance

Defensive importance
Since there are no wingers, Wing-Backs:

Delay wide counters

Funnel play into low-xG crossing zones

Maintain the back-5 shape out of possession

🧠 MIDFIELD CORE
CHM – Channel Half-Midfielder (Support)

The spine of the tactic

Key instruction

Move Into Channels (half-spaces, not wings)

Role logic

Protects the central zone in transition

Supports SS runs from deeper areas

Maintains the 3–2 rest defence

Why CHM and not DM
FM26 rewards CHM movement into half-spaces without abandoning structure.
This role is crucial for away stability.

CM – Central Midfielder (Support)

Role logic

Late box runner

Secondary goal threat

Maintains vertical occupation

Key instructions

Make More Runs

Shoot Less Often

Why

Adds penalty-box presence without stealing SS space

FM26 rewards second-wave arrivals heavily

🎯 ATTACKING CORE
AP – Advanced Playmaker (Attack)

The system’s brain

Role logic

Controls tempo in the final third

Links midfield to SS

Creates without over-forcing

Key instruction

Move Into Channels

Why Attack

FM26 AP(A) attracts defenders

Opens lanes for SS diagonal runs

Replaces traditional striker creativity

SS (Left) – Shadow Striker (Attack)

Half-space destabiliser

Behaviour

Diagonal runs

Far-post attacks

Links with overlapping WB

This SS naturally operates deeper and wider due to spacing — not instructions.

SS (Right) – Shadow Striker (Attack)

Vertical penetrator

Behaviour

Attacks FB–CB gaps

Stretches defensive line

First runner behind the defence

Why BOTH SS are Attack (FM26-specific)

In FM26:

SS(Support) delays movement

SS(Attack) attacks space decisively

Strikerless systems need early box occupation

Support duty breaks this.
Attack duty is mandatory in FM26 strikerless systems.

⚙️ TEAM INSTRUCTIONS – WHY THEY WORK
In Possession

Higher Tempo → forces fast circulation without chaos

Wider → enables Wing-Back width

Low Crosses → suited for late runners & SS

Discourage Long Shots → improves xG quality

Counter-Attack ON → immediate exploitation of broken lines

In Transition

Counter-Press ON → regains territory quickly

Regroup (situationally) → reduces away volatility when needed

This balance prevents both chaos and passivity.

Out of Possession

High Press

Standard Defensive Line

Press More Often (not Much More Often)

Why

FM26 punishes over-pressing away

Compact high block is more effective than reckless chasing

🧠 WHY THIS TACTIC IS PATCH-RESISTANT

No hard exploits

No role glitches

No duty abuse

Logic-based spacing

FM26-specific SS behaviour

This is why it:

Works home & away

Works over multiple seasons

Doesn’t collapse after updates

Finally much realistic tactic on near top, congrats
CBP87 said: What database are you using in terms of player updates?

I would probably go with a 4231 using Nico on the left, Sancet as an AM and Berenguer on the right with Inaki up front. Focus on Acceleration and Pace and make sure you get Nico signing a new contract ASAP get that minimum fee release clause as high as possible

Thank you for your answers. I am using latest databa. Actually directly prefering to sell Inaki which brings 78 Mil euro so that i can invest on long term new players which makes better long term run. However first season is headache due less ST available, unless signing Bautista or any U16 promises.
I would like to ask your opinion on either this tactic or 424 Classic CBP87 x PS v1.5 BW is more suitable for Athletic Bilbao save ? Since there are less options for Basque Striker and AMC, I hardly can decide. Of course will hunt for U16 Spanish players to make them Basque too. Anyway need your short opinion :) Thanks
Hello,
Can you please tell me which player/s played for Pressing Forward on this save ? Thanks
LB as IWB, will be perfect
Swap IF and IW roles and CM and MEZ roles to see difference perheps ?
very stable tactic. congrats
Mid-Block structure seems stopping overconceding goals against. Also Wingbacks was creating so much gap to lose marking, so Full Back with Get further forward seems balancing runs. Not much crazy amount of goals scoring but seems balanced tactic against AI teams. Tested with Real Madrid which may need better IFs , CM, DM. After FM-arena test i will test with M. City. Then with adjustments. So 2 more replay on this post will come.
So far seems rare times losing a match, effective Attacking Corners. Inside Forward roles are working much better than Inverted Winger on this tactic. Lets have it a test ) Enjoy.
noo :(
Lost some games on busy week of fixture, fixable with good squad rotation and still need work on defensive corners.
After several one season actual plays, turns out stable tactic for me. Tactic needs some work against incoming indirect free kicks which could be lower 8 IDF goals against. Anyway I hope it will give all of us some clues to find better tactics.
