Why Lower CA Players Outperform Higher CA Players

by jajakillki, Feb 25, 2025

Hi everyone,
I've noticed something interesting in my save and would like to understand it better. Some players with lower current ability (CA) are outperforming players with higher CA. For example:

A 39-year-old player with 137 CA is performing much better than a 27-year-old player with 151 CA.

Despite having low pace (6) and acceleration (8), Edin Dzeko is consistently performing exceptionally well, even though pace and acceleration are considered 'meta' attributes in FM24.

What factors could be causing this? Is it related to:

Hidden attributes (e.g., consistency, important matches, professionalism)?

Tactical fit (e.g., player role, team style)?

Mental attributes (e.g., decisions, anticipation, leadership)?

Experience and age (e.g., older players performing better in certain roles)?

Something else I might be missing?

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

My guess is that it's probably not tactical fit, since both players seem to be playing the same position for the same team.

I also doubt it's really personality focused, although Dzeko has a much more desirable personality.

Honestly, it could just be the random number generator at work.

Taller players works lige magic in striker position. I got Milan Duric in Parma save and he scored more than 50 goals in the season half of them corners, others are almost all of headers. There was Yoan Bony to next to him and he didn't perform not even half of Duric.

Just to add to the topic. CA is relatively weak indicator because it's influenced by the attributes related to the player's natural position - and those often don't come along with meta-attributes. CA is more related to certain attributes distribution than their actual effect on the give position.

Example - Determination has literally 0 'weight' (not matter the natural position) so is not influenced/does not influence CA AT ALL yet Determination has an impact on player's performance as shown here.

Another example is that Jumping Reach has very low weight for strikers so if we have 2 strikers, both with almost the same CA one can have 20 Jumping Reach and the other 1. Make a guess which one will score more BY A LOT.

Example weights of attributes for each position in FM21:

There was some chinese experiment where guy made a team consisting of 'artificial' players with only 1 CA and won the Prem, simply because he abused attribute distribution that is related to the CA.

PA can be a bit of a red herring if you decide to build your team around it.

For a good few years one of the best players in the game was Callum Wilson, his CA was around 155 putting him in the upper end but due to the fact he could play only one position and had a very optimised attribute distribution he could easily outscore players in the 160/170 bracket.
