I've changed quite a lot about this tactic this time but the main talking points are the volantes, attacking mentality, and work ball into the box. This is Boris 4-2-3-1 v4

It did well in the Premier League for Man City, and achieved my best league performance so far. City also won the FA Cup, Community Shield, Carabao Cup and were runners-up in the Champions League.

As you can see, Bournemouth were hit hugely by RNG because they should have got roughly 56 points. However, it was also my personal best xG performance from Man City.

Afternoon, I've tweaked Boris v2 slightly as a result of the new top tactic on FM Arena this morning with the FB on attack. This is Boris 4-2-3-1 v3.

+ FB(A)
+ IF(S)

The player instructions remain the same. Take more risks, tackle harder, shoot less often, dribble more are all added to applicable positions. Stay wider is added to the BPDs and FBs. Cross from byline is added to the FBs. Sit narrower is added to the IFs. Get further forward is added to the DMs.

This is the first test I've ever done that Watford and Birmingham both manage to get promoted, although this was probably because of a weird (albeit realistic) underperformance from Norwich. Watford also would have had a lot more points had they not played like they were drunk once the title was secured.

It isn't the best performance from xG that I've ever had, but it's certainly up there. As I said, this was mainly made in response to the new top tactic on FM Arena involving the changes down the flanks so I wouldn't be too surprised if this isn't better than Boris v2.
Hopefully this will still be top after the next few thousand games it now has to go through
My nostalgia trip from FM21 hasn't gone brilliantly I'm not gonna lie
This did a lot better than I thought it would to be honest. Although the main takeaway from this is that adding player instructions like "take more risks" is probably detrimental
Happy new year everyone. I have created another tactic, this time it is based on ZaZ Blue in FM21 but using the @Delicious metarules from this year.

A very familiar tactic for those that played FM21 but includes the focus down the flanks that seems to perform so well in this match engine.

Man City won the league and Bournemouth came 8th. While the 91 points from City may not look so impressive on the face of it, bear in mind that they played this whole season without Haaland playing a single game due to the nature of the formation. Instead, Phil Foden won the golden boot with 22 goals.

Thought I'd put the expected points in this to show that Bournemouth were tremendously unlucky not to get any form of European football. However, there are some more interesting expected statistics that I'd like to show this time.

Bournemouth actually had the 4th most non-penalty xG per 90 in the league, which isn't too surprising given how attacking all of these tactics are. In the next screenshot you can see that Bournemouth also had the 6th least xGA per game.

I'm very interested to see how this does when the FM Arena server comes back on
Despite me saying that I will not be tweaking any other kind of 4-2-3-1, here I am with exactly that. This is Boris 4-2-3-1 v2.

Despite using the Licious metarules from this year, it incorporates a lot of the meta from last year in terms of player instructions.

Did very well with Man City, amassing 100 points. Bournemouth performed averagely.

However, Bournemouth were very unlucky not to perform better in the league.

Yeah that's what I figured from some testing the other day

The truth lies in something else mate... A bit sad about that it's most likely the shape is "Locked" on benchmark, but gonna check it where or how later on.

Many people told me already that they prefer to remove stuck-in and tackle, let's see how it give so we can even move around

I'm actually just doing this test to see which system I want to use in my own save. My squad is set up for a 4-2-3-1 but I love my "simplified" tactic because it's good defensively and gives a lot of possession. However, if this is better I'll use this instead
So I think it's time to draw a close on this tactic since I can only take a 4-2-3-1 so far and there are lots of formations that perform better in testing. So, here is Woodball FINAL.

It is based on @Delicious tactics but still includes my idea of no player instructions to see how it would do. The only player roles that have been changed are the two volantes because I've seen it do well in tactics at the top of the table.

Watford got 97 points as well as Birmingham also getting 97 points. However, Birmingham lost in the playoff final. So why am I bigging up this tactic so much if it is doing worse than my previous attempts.

The simple answer is because it's not. With Watford it equals my personal best at expected points from the simplified version uploaded previously. With Birmingham it beats the tally from that tactic by two.

This will probably be the last edition of Woodball that I upload.
Just when you think it's over, Zaz comes out with something like this
Wigo said: hey managers,

for last couples of weeks i am spending days and testing best tactics from the table and comparing how is it working... tactics are great teams are overachieving massively all great! But what annoys me is every single test with underdog or top team doesnt matter CD players ratings are below average! DR-DL position as well... if your cd scores from corner ok that game he as 7+ rating, but if not they are mostly like 6.3 - 6.5... ive tried so many combinations and no luck to make CD's consistently get at least 6.8-7.0 ratings... aany one on the same pattern? :)

Full-backs mainly get their ratings from crosses completed I find, so roles like IWB rarely do well. A lot of a CBs rating is taken from aerial duel win %. If your CBs are on the near post at corners, they won't win that many headers as corners have been nerfed.

Congratulations Mr crizeKOS!
Another update to this specific 4-2-3-1 as I haven't tweaked it in a while. This is Woodball 4-2-3-1 v6.

This is almost identical to the simplified version of this tactic I uploaded last week but I have added tackle harder to all players, although that remains the only addition.

Watford got 104 points in the league which is the highest I have managed so far. Birmingham finished 3rd with 91.

Expected points were healthy although not as impressive as they were before I added tackle harder, but this is probably an RNG related thing
MemorizableUsername said: Any reason why you chose to test with Watford & Birmingham ?

Watford predicted 1st in the Championship and Birmingham are predicted 24th. Man City and Bournemouth tests are more useful but I am a Watford fan so I have a bias for using them more often
Hi all, here is another 4-2-3-1 (a shape that I am determined to get right) but it has changed quite a lot, hence the name change.

It's back again including the theory behind @Delicious shape to see if it is a universal meta or just something that works well with a specific shape.

It did well with Watford and Birmingham, but not as well as it sometimes does.

Slightly underwhelmed by the expected points. My gut feeling is that this tactic won't do well and that these specific instructions work best with two strikers up front, but we'll wait and see.

And back to the 4-2-4 we go
Overlaps mean that play is slowed down to allow the full-back time to overlap, therefore getting more men forward. If you look at the two tactics, the one with overlaps is better defensively but worse offensively. This is because the attacking play is slowed down, also meaning that the opposition has less time on the ball and so fewer goalscoring opportunities.

Likewise, the tactic without overlaps is better offensively as it attacks with more intensity but is is worse defensively as it takes more risks instead of waiting for the full-backs to catch up. Overall, I think it's just down to personal preference rather than being a meta instruction.
Ok this is cool. Would like to see if focusing down the flanks is necessary (although I think it is)
crizeKOS said: Mid focus play seems kinda cosmetic too. Maybe is working with system with alot of players on mid (narrow ones). U guys must change shape for 14222 or 141212

Yeah I think this formation actually needs the AML and AMR to be traditional wingers but I think that's probably already been done
Delicious said: Don't worry, but both of them work on same way ^^! It was a process from 4231 that made me going here and around in order to gather data.
Just check before you wanna post something otherwise Zippo is going to bip bip me most likely...

Interestingly it didn't work too well in testing despite pretty much being the same as the 4-1-3-2. We go again
