You will see in the tactics section I have tested a tactic using formation, roles and mentality that I thought came out best. It has tested very well for me. I used formation rather than position as I think this means more. Split formation into 5 rows, DC DLR then WBLR DM then MLR MC then AMLR AMC then ST.

I haven't got to the instructions yet and it might be a bridge too far

Below are the results:

Thanks for the extra data!
Babyzz said: Those wingers. Just use normal wingers? Or like defenders who make winger?

Normal wingers with lots of pace, acceleration, agility and dribbling.
TactocTestor said: More dribbling = good. So should i teach my defenders to play out of trouble and bring balls out of defence?

To be honest, I checked the data of my team and defenders do very close to zero dribbles per match, so I'm not sure if bringing the ball out of defense would make much of a difference. I'm not sure why it still works better with "dribble more" than without.
Changed to a spreadsheet so it can be changed dynamically as new tactics are tested.

Canyou test this tactic?

How to use more than one Libero?
thepunisher23 said: hello , how do you determine if your team is stronger or weaker than the opponent?

A stronger team is one that you don't expect to win in normal circunstances. For example, when a newly promoted team in Premier League faces the likes of Liverpool. In that case, I often use the strategy to stall in the first half, to get opponents nervous or complacent, then I change mentality in the second half to snatch a winning goal when they start performing worse.
Han106 said: Hello, I'm playing the typical journeyman save. In Boston Utd, a semi-professional team. What would you use the 4 training slots on?

Usually Teamwork, Attacking Movement, Defense Positioning and Team Bonding. Those give bonus for the next match, hapiness and cohesion, as well as resting your players enough to be used every single match of the season (since you probably have a small squad).

Since the players are usually awful and your training grounds are also bad, it's kinda pointless to focus on atribute gain.
TactocTestor said: Hi should i teach my anyone in my team the ppm like to switch balls to other flanks. Most of the highlights come from through balls/ set piece so im not sure how effective switching balls to other flanks would be.

I usually only learn player traits that overlap with their playing role. Since the tactic has already proved to be effective, I prefer to make sure the players stick to it instead of doing some unexpected behavior. I'm not saying switch balls is worse, I just prefer to stick to what I know works well.
I'm isolating the best score of each position and role in FM-Arena as well as each team instruction. As a reminder, a low score doesn't mean a position, role or instruction is bad, since they were not tested in similar conditions. Tables are presented in the link below.

For player instructions, @Egraam is keeping tables in the link below.

What kind of whitchcraft you did to use three liberos? Here, I can only set the middle one to that role.
Machismo said: I took the description "Hack" from 'Bust the Net' an FM guru.  He described the "automatic" setting  instead of att/sup/def. for fullbacks as 'the oldest hack in FM'.

It's not a good feature, to be honest. Using automatic will often be the same as setting the role manually, plus performing worse when you change the team mentality.
Talking about hints, there is something that would be interesting to do, but I guess only @Mark would have the patience to do so. I would like to see a list of each position, role, player instruction and team instruction, with the maximum score it got in tests in FM-Arena. That way we could see what definitely doesn't work, like IF or strikers in general, and what does work.
CheekyChappy said: Hey @ZaZ, a couple of questions if you don't mind?

With the midfield setup, is it possible to move the DLP into midfield next to the CM?

Also, if you were to have a trio of one for home, one for away and one to deal with the much bigger teams when away, which of your tactics would you use?

Keep up the good work!

About moving DLP to CM, it's "possible", but the tactic would become way worse. I already tested and wouldn't recommend.

I'd tell you to play Blue everywhere, but I don't think that's the answer you want.

I don't see matches as home or away, or against stronger or weaker team. I see as if every match can have three types of moments:

1. When you just want a higher chance to score than the enemy. For this case, I recommend Blue 3.0, but Phoenix and Afterlife are equally good options.

2. When you are willing to sacrifice defense to score more goals. For that task, I would recommend Blue 3.0 with Very Attacking mentality (Dark Blue), but Void would also do a similar job (if not better).

3. When you are willing to sacrifice attack to concede less goals. For this case, I would use Blue 3.0 on Cautious mentality, but Copper and this tweak of Phoenix would also work very well.
TactocTestor said: Hi do you still set your players for quickness training even when they clearly can't develop quickness anymore (old players)?

I usually only hire players up to 21 years old and don't use any over 29. I might be wrong here, but I think training quickness past 30 years makes their speed drop slower.
Rince said: Have you tried this?

Ohh, I misread his question, thought he wanted to automate first team players picked to a match, ignoring those that are not in top condition. I guess he wanted exactly what you said.
Machismo said: Are there some tweaks I can use to improve my team?
e.g. 1) I've found you can set fullbacks RL to auto instead of fixed attack/sup/def.
2)You can set training intensity to auto.

One I'm desperate for is how to automate first team players to play in the reserves when they become unfit rather than me having to notice they are NOT in top condition.
and are there any others that'll help the manager?

You can always ask your assistant manager to pick the team, then they will consider player fitness. It's not gonna be optimal, but I don't see another way to automatize player pick.
bwig said: by the way for the LM RM I strongly recommend players with the "ability to do the unexpected is one of the main reasons to go past his man" (its the explosive dynamite icon in "pros";). I guess its fitting so well because it brings the player to that byline to cross from by dribbling past his opponement. Either way for me those guys on the wings are game changers with this tactic. Let me know if u agree.

DW, CM and SS are definitely key for this strategy, as it has some good balance between attack by the middle and wide. If I was to pick one single player to spend loads of money, it would be in the CM. If I was to remove one single player because of a red card, it would also be the CM.
Kma said: all that i need is pace and acceleration? PS: i play in tier 10 - england i don't have scout ><

I don't know what is tier 10. If you mean the lowest division, then you should filter players by interest, then have trials by groups of 30 to reveal their stats.
Kma said: @Mark @ZaZ Please can you share ingame filters Player Search i don't use Genie Scout thank you in advance

Use the scout meeting to ask for players with high pace and acceleration. Add those columns to the squad of other teams and check their youth teams for young players with high attributes. Go to scouting center and search for players with some interest and high pace and acceleration, and add those columns to the search. Hiring scouts from different nationalities also help.
Duller said: Btw ZaZ, do u recommend op instructions against big players?

I never use, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good idea. I just don't know how effective each of those instructions really are.

alexdum03 said: Hello everyone,
sorry for my english i'm french.
I would like to know if any of you had instructions for a "match plan" during an "instant result"?
thank you all for all this great job.

I don't use it, but something like this, starting from Blue 3.0:
- Very Attacking (Dark Blue 3.0) if not winning at second half
- Blue 3.0 if winning by one goal
- Cautious if winning by two goals
- Light Blue 3.0 if winning by three goals
